The Festival of the Three Kings, also known as Epiphany, tells the story of three kings from the East: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They traveled to greet the newborn child, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. In honor of the kings, red, blue, and green candles are used, particularly by Waldorf and Anthroposophical communities, during the period that begins on January 6 and ends on Ash Wednesday.
